Third Planet Environmental LLC is a consulting company based out of Oregon that provides inspection, survey, and testing of hazardous materials in residential and commercial properties.

LEAD TESTING

Lead is a very common component to older structures in the Northwest. We offer on-site as well as lab testing on suspect paint and materials. Lead can also be found in water sources and we offer water laboratory testing to determine lead levels. A report will be provided on the findings of your suspect materials as well as consulting on how to proceed with your results. Third Planet Environmental is not an abatement company and has no conflict of interest in our findings.

EPA REGULATIONS:

Performing renovation, repair and painting projects that disturb lead-based paint in homes, childcare facilities, and kindergartens built before 1978 must be EPA- or state-certified and must use certified renovators who follow specific work practices to prevent lead contamination.

LEAD PAINT

In 1978 lead-based paints were banned for use due to their health risk factors. If your building was constructed before 1978 there is a chance that the paint contains lead, and the probability increases if it was built prior to the 60s. Any repairs, renovations or painting on top of pre-existing lead paint requires certified lead-safe work practices and removal of lead paint requires a licensed abatement contractor. Lead based paint violations can carry fines up to $7,700 in Oregon. We can help determine if your paint contains lead.

WATER CONTAMINATION

The majority of Oregon’s lead-contaminated water issues are due to plumbing done in the 70s and 80s. In 1985, lead was banned for joining pipes in Oregon, due to the known health problems attributed to lead. Since there is potential for lead to be present in ground water, deterioration in lead-based plumbing is the major concern.

DANGERS OF LEAD

There is a range of issues that come from human contact with lead. The most concerning is in children who ingest or inhale lead particulate. Lead is a neurotoxin and long-term effects for children exposed to even small levels of lead can include damage to the brain and nervous system, slowed development and growth, behavioral and learning issues, hearing, and speech problems. In adults higher exposure to lead can lead to kidney damage, brain damage, anemia, and weakness. It is also a risk to women who are pregnant and their developing child’s nervous system. These are the leading reasons why identifying and preventing exposure to lead is so important.
